An SRV record is a DNS record, which is used to direct a domain name to a third-party server and use it for a service different from a site. This may be a Voice-Over-IP server, a video streaming service, an instant messaging system, and so on. When an SRV record is set up, you can specify an Internet Protocol which the domain name will use and the port, which will be used to connect to the remote server. Additionally, if you have a few SRV records for the same service, you can set individual priorities and weights for each one of them, so you're able to send out the load between a number of machines. Such a record will allow you to employ the same domain name or subdomains under it with different providers, so you can use it for many purposes even if you cannot get all the services from one service provider.

SRV Records in Cloud Hosting

The Hepsia Control Panel, provided with each and every cloud hosting plan we offer, provides you with an easy means to set up any DNS record you require for a domain address or a subdomain in your account. The user-friendly interface is simpler than what other companies provide and you will not have to do anything more complex than to fill several boxes. For a new SRV record, you will have to log in, navigate to the DNS Records section and click on the "New" button. Inside the small pop-up that'll show up, you have to input the service, protocol and port information. You can also set the priority and weight values, which should be between 1 and 100, that would make a difference if you have at least a couple of servers dealing with the exact same service. If you work with a machine from a different provider, they could also require you to set a TTL value different from the default 3600 seconds. This value outlines how long the newly created record is going to remain functional after you modify it in the future.

SRV Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Since we know how aggravating it can be to handle DNS records, we'll give you an easy-to-use DNS administration tool as part of our custom-made Hepsia CP, so when you host your domain names within a semi-dedicated server account from our company, you're going to be able to set up an SRV record without complications. We also have a step-by-step guide, that'll make things that much easier. Using a user-friendly interface, you will have to type in the details that the other company has supplied you with - protocol, port number and service. Unless they've given you specific instructions to change the priority and / or the weight values, you may leave these two options as they are and your brand new record will go live in a few minutes. The Time To Live option (TTL) may also be set to a custom value, but usually the default value of 3600 seconds is used for almost all records. This value indicates the time the record will keep existing after it's changed or removed.
